Chapter Seven
Carrie stared down at the ice cubes floating in her drink. Across the table from her, Charles appeared relaxed, a stranger to the man who had earlier announced harshly that he intended to own her.
He set down his drink and picked up a chip from the basket of fresh taco chips the waiter had just put down at their table. She watched him take a bite of the taco, realized abruptly that he was aware of her watching
On the other side of the restaurant, a young Mexican man began to sing in soft Spanish into a microphone
Charles said idly, âTranslate for me, Carrie.â
She shook her head. It was a love song
Inside, she felt numb. When Charles left her alone in his room, she had fled to her bedroom with the towel, locking the door, hiding. Hiding, but how could she escape? Could she run again? That's what she had tried to do when she came down here, but she'd hardly realized then just how much danger she was in. She had fled Vancouver, afraid that Charles must know she loved him, that she would have to face the humiliation of knowing her love was exposed, that he did not want it.
He had come to Mexico, fully intending to manipulate Carrie into returning to work. But sometime in the course of the last week, he had changed his objective. It still did not make sense to Carrie, but he was determined to marry her. It was as if after failing to win his bid to bring her back to the office, he had determined to gain a larger victory despite the cost.
It was unlike Charles to lose sight of reason. That frightened her more than anything. She had always counted on him to be rational, to be in control. If he wasn't, if he was determined to win their private battle whatever it cost him, then he might do anything.
He had no idea that she loved him, that she would do anything for him if he really needed her. If he did know...how could she survive a marriage openly vulnerable to a man who did not love her?
âCharles?â Carrie eyed him across the table. âYou said we would talk tonight.â
âI think we've talked enough for the time being.â
He was marking time. Leaving her uncertain of what he would do next, worried. Worry was an exhausting emotion. She picked up her glass again and tried to think of where she could go. He could get back into her apartment, might actually still have her address book. So friends were out, and so was home to her parents. He would come after her. Her mother and father would let him in with a smile. He would charm them, just as he had charmed Jane and Kirk and the children.
Alex Candon might understand if Carrie confided in him, but she could hardly go crashing in on Alex and Sarah's honeymoon. She did not even know where they were. And even if Alex did understand, he was hardly likely to conceal her from Charles.
